Become aware of your old patterns
This powerful tool is most effective if you start by using it at least once or twice each day when you are in a relaxed or meditative state.

As you get more and more into the practice of using this awareness tool you’ll find you can use it anywhere at any time with your eyes open or closed – and the more you use it the easier and more fun your life becomes.
You will also be using this tool more in days to come – along with other tools you’ll discover in coming steps – to clear your old patterns and blocks as quickly and as effectively as possible.
To begin
Get yourself into a comfortable position in a place where you will not be disturbed for at least 10 minutes.
Close your eyes and watch your breathing.
Allow everything to be just the way it is and continue watch your breath going in and going out.
As you do this, imagine your breath is passing in and out through your heart with every breath you take. This helps to automatically focus your attention internally and particularly on your heart, which has been scientifically proven to be the source of healing energy for your mind and for your body.
Next
As soon as you’re ready start to become aware of what is happening inside your body and your mind. Start to notice any sensations in any part of your body – whether they are pleasant sensation, or uncomfortable sensations, such as pain, discomfort, cold or itching for example.
Again, continue to allow everything to be just the way it is while you just watch those sensations – as if they are going through someone else’s body. Watch without judgement, without criticism and without wanting or trying to change them in any way.
At the same time notice any thoughts, ideas or feelings going through your mind – and observe these in exactly the same way – as if they are going through someone else’s mind and you’re just studying them – without wanting or trying to change them in any way.
Always remember the more you want or try to change anything – in your body, in your mind, in your life or even in someone else – the more resistance you’ll get. So instead just observe and watch as everything changes all the time. Notice all those changes without being involved in them.
Next
Continue to practice sitting quiet and watching every feeling, sensation, thought and emotion going through your mind and your body – as if you are a scientist, observing what goes on in that body and in that mind.
I find it helps to give a running commentary of what you notice, always without judgement or criticism – and if you notice judgement or criticism coming up – just watch those thoughts and feelings too from the outside.
So you might notice and say to yourself things such as –
‘I notice an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach – isn’t that interesting’
‘I notice its getting stronger and moving to the left – isn’t that interesting’
‘I notice I’m telling myself it shouldn’t be that way – isn’ that interesting.’
‘I notice I’m telling myself I can’t do this – isn’t that interesting’
‘I notice the noise of my neighbours arriving home and I notice I make myself irritated by telling myself I should be in complete quiet to do this – isn’t that interesting’
So I thing you’re getting the idea – whatever happens and whatever you notice that’s ok – even if your mind wanders off and you’re not observing – as soon as you notice you got distracted you just notice that and go back to watching yourself internally again.
Everything that happens is what should be happening – because it is happening – so let it be the way it is for now – and notice how things change all on their own – when you allow them to be and to change automatically in this way.
Do this for at least 10 minutes, and for longer if you like, at least once a day and then build up gradually as you find it easier to do all the time.
You’ll very soon start to notice your old unsupportive patterns – the things you tell yourself and how you make yourself feel bad.
Just noticing these patterns will effectively start to break and change those patterns.
Soon you’ll be learning more very powerful tools for clearing these old patterns even more quickly, but for the moment practice using this tool, because its amazingly powerful on its own and you’ll be using it with the other tools very soon.
Get yourself to sleep easily
This is also a really great tool to use to get to sleep at night if you’ve had difficulties sleeping.
Get into bed and follow exactly the same procedure. Notice how long it takes for you to get to sleep when you stop trying and allow everything to be just the way it is.

You might ask yourself questions like:
I wonder how I can find it really easy and fun to notice all the feelings, thoughts and sensations going through my mind and my body now.
I wonder how I can find it easy to allow everything to be the just the way it is while I observe with interest everything I tell myself and everything I feel while noticing how everything changes automatically all on its own.
I wonder how I can notice the amazing effects this tool has on my experiences and on my life from now on.
